NEMASKA, Eeyou Istchee (March 2, 2017) – On the afternoon of March 1st, 2017, Grand Chief Matthew Coon Come was involved in a snowmobile accident near Mistissini. The incident occurred while the Grand Chief was moose hunting on the territory in the Mistissini area.
After the Eeyou/Eenou Police Force Detachment of Mistissini was contacted, a team comprised of the First Responders, Fire Department and a doctor from the Mistissini clinic was transported by plane to respond to the call. Grand Chief Matthew Coon Come was initially brought to Mistissini clinic for medical assessment. He was later transferred to the Chibougamau Hospital for further medical care. While he did not sustain any life threatening injuries, he did suffer one (1) broken rib and two (2) fractured ribs.
According to the medical evaluation, the Grand Chief’s recovery period is expected to last for a minimum of two (2) weeks, after which he will be re-evaluated. We will keep you updated on his recovery.
